1 square meter of the occupied territory
Public art installation
Marble, plastic
2025

A marble slab engraved with the words “Besetztes Gebiet” (“Occupied territory”). Along the edges of the slab, engraved in small lowercase letters, are possessive pronouns arranged in a circle: “myyourhisherourtheir...”

This work was installed in a pedestrian zone on Marktplatz—one of the central squares of Offenbach am Main, Germany. What does it mean to wake up one day and find that part of a shared public space has been occupied—not for construction or repair, but simply because someone decided to claim it? This installation poses a direct and subtle question about ownership, control, and the fragile boundaries of shared spaces.
