Human dehumanizes human
Marble, wood, coal
2023-2025

The installation is a series of marble headless animals with elements of human anatomy. They stand or sit on brutal wooden bases that evoke medieval torture devices. Coal is scattered on the floor, and visitors step on it, producing an uncanny sound. The coal crunches and gets stuck in their soles, so when leaving, they leave black traces on the street—forming a path that leads back to the gallery.

This work speaks about dehumanization during war, when the value of human life is reduced to zero and opponents cease to perceive each other as human. By calling the enemy animals or subhumans, society creates a psychological distance from the “other,” freeing itself from the feeling of guilt for what is happening. This makes it easier to carry out military tasks and to justify any violence or cruelty.

The installation reconstructs collective involvement in war. Marble figures present terrifying images of violence, exiled into the depths of the unconscious, while coal dust instantly makes the viewer part of what is happening.
